WHAT IS A DENTAL CROWN AND IN WHICH CASES IS IT NEEDED?

A crown is a dental work that replaces the missing crown part of your own tooth, it is indissolubly attached to the prepared tooth, so it is a permanent, fixed tooth replacement. If the tooth to be restored has a large amount of decay/extensive filling, or if it has undergone root canal treatment and there is little remaining healthy tooth material, a crown may be necessary in order to be able to keep the tooth in the long term. Crowns are often used for aesthetic purposes in the event that the size or shape of the teeth in the smile zone needs a large correction. A crown can also be prepared for an implant if we need to replace a missing tooth.

WHAT MATERIAL CAN A CROWN BE MADE OF?

  • Metal ceramics: in this case, ceramic layers are fired onto a metal (cobalt-chrome) base frame. A heavy-duty, classic tooth replacement, which is usually used in the area of molars and molars (i.e. in the back zone), as its aesthetics are inferior to those of metal-free crowns.
  • Zirconium-ceramic crown: the base frame is made of metal-free zirconium dioxide, which is a white colored ceramic. Aesthetic porcelain is layered on top of this basic framework so that the dentures are lifelike and deceptively similar to natural teeth.
  • Full contour zirconium crown: if there is no extra layer of porcelain on the zirconia frame, we are talking about a full contour crown. In such cases, the crown is digitally carved from a single block, and then painted with a lifelike tooth color with a special paint.
  • Pressed ceramic (E-max) crown: of all the solutions, this type of crown is the most realistic and aesthetic. In this case, the crown has no frame, light can penetrate through it, giving the tooth a natural appearance.

HOW LONG IS THE CROWN SOLUTION?

On average, dental crowns take approx. 10 years. Proper care and oral hygiene or with regular dental control, the dental prosthesis can be worn for a very long time, otherwise, the replacement of the crown may become justified due to the disease of the tooth under the crown.
